02 · Preflight report
The report separates final-size resolution, sharpness, crop coverage, tonal separation, clipping, fine-detail risk, and file characteristics. There is no opaque quality score.
Final size changes the answer
A 1200 px crop is not simply good or bad. At a small final width it may carry plenty of source samples. Enlarged much further, the same crop spreads those pixels across more physical space. The checker reports that relationship instead of treating one PPI threshold as a tattoo law.

A Laplacian-based edge metric looks for high-frequency changes in the analysed region. It can flag a soft source, but it cannot distinguish every motion, focus, depth-of-field, or stylistic choice.

The tool does not guess the subject. You can frame the part intended for the stencil so a small face, pet, flower, or logo is measured from its own usable pixels rather than from the whole photo.

The report combines a robust 5th-to-95th-percentile luminance spread with local contrast. It helps reveal references where nearby forms may carry little visible separation.

The checker reports the share of pixels very close to black and white. Those zones are not automatically wrong, but they can contain fewer visible separations to preserve.

Edge density is read together with final-size sampling. A detailed source enlarged aggressively deserves more scrutiny than the same source used at a smaller footprint.
Read the report
The output is deliberately split by problem so you can decide what to request, crop, resize, or inspect before generation. A single percentage would hide the reason behind the warning.
Blur and softness are measured from the selected pixels, but the metric does not understand artistic intent. A portrait can have sharp eyes and a soft background. A low global sharpness number only matters when the region you actually need is also soft.
Near-black and near-white values are equally contextual. A black shirt or white background can be intentional. The useful question is whether important structure sits inside those extreme areas and still contains visible separations.
Crop can matter more than total resolution. If a client's face uses 18% of a large frame, the face does not inherit every pixel in the full image. Turn on the focus region and run the checks on the part that will actually drive the stencil.
Clear ownership
These tools intentionally answer different questions so the same file problem does not get two competing owners.
This tool
It checks the original reference before stencil preparation: source pixels, selected crop, sharpness signal, tone, clipping, detail density, and final-size sampling.
Starts later, from a finished stencil file. It checks physical-size and print-side risks, including optional thermal output geometry.
Owns exact physical sizing, paper fit, calibration, and true-size PDF output after you have a stencil to prepare for print.
Limits
The report is a preparation assistant. It deliberately stops before aesthetic, anatomical, clinical, execution, and outcome claims.
It cannot judge artistic quality or whether a design is universally tattooable.
It cannot guarantee portrait or pet likeness after generation, transfer, or tattooing.
It cannot determine anatomy, placement correctness, healing, health, or safety.
It cannot certify that a generated stencil will be correct or that a printer will reproduce it cleanly.
It cannot infer subject importance automatically. The optional focus region is chosen by the artist.
It cannot recover detail that is absent from the source. Enhancement may create plausible pixels, not evidence of the original subject.
Continue
If the reference is workable, continue into the matching workflow. If an important region is genuinely missing information, request a better original before spending time on stencil cleanup.
