Diagnose a tattoo stencil that printed larger or smaller than intended. Measure the paper, compare target and document size, then isolate scaling in the print path.

Where did scale change?
Do not diagnose from the screen preview alone. Start with a target dimension, verify the prepared document, inspect the actual print path, then measure the sheet. The first checkpoint that disagrees tells you which layer deserves attention.

Uniform reduction
Width and height both smaller by about the same ratio
Look for one scale factor: target placement, paper mismatch, Fit, Shrink, or another uniform transform.
Uniform enlargement
Width and height both larger by about the same ratio
Check custom scale, fill/crop behavior, borderless expansion, or an already oversized document placement.
Aspect ratio changed
Width and height changed by different ratios
This is not one clean scale factor. Inspect source/export/layout steps for non-proportional transformation.
Clipping, not scale
Known dimensions are right, but an edge is missing
Check printable area, margins, crop/fill behavior, or whether the design should be tiled across more paper.
Inconsistent multi-page path
Page A and page B measure differently
Verify every page used the same paper, app, orientation, scale mode, and border setting. Do not stretch one tile.
One-factor pattern
Both axes changed by the same ratio. If a 50 mm calibration line also measures 47.5 mm, a uniform downstream scale change is strong evidence. Find that layer instead of compensating the artwork.
Not one-factor scaling
The aspect ratio changed. One enlargement percentage cannot correct both axes. Return to the source, export, or layout path and find the non-proportional transformation.
The deciding test
A PDF, preview, 100% setting, or manufacturer preset is evidence about the workflow. The ruler on the physical sheet is evidence about the result. Use both a calibration mark and one meaningful design dimension when exact size matters.
If the stencil looked right on screen but came off the printer larger or smaller than the tattoo you planned, do not start by resizing the artwork again. First find the point where a known physical dimension changed.
Put the printed sheet on the table and measure it. Write down the intended width or height and the actual printed width or height. If the print master includes a calibration line, measure that too.
That paper measurement is stronger evidence than the preview. A screen can show the correct proportions while telling you nothing about whether the design will be 80 mm, 120 mm, or 180 mm on paper.

A wrong-size print becomes easier to diagnose when you stop treating "size" as one number.
A file can have excellent pixel dimensions and still print at the wrong physical size. A PDF can have the correct page size while the artwork inside it is placed at the wrong size. A correct PDF can still be scaled by the print application. The only final proof is the paper measurement.
Use a dimension that was known before the print.
The strongest check is a calibration mark that belongs to the print master. In StencilStudio's Size & Print workflow, the reference line is 50 mm. If that line prints at 47.5 mm, the paper result is at 95% of the intended linear scale.
Then measure one meaningful stencil dimension as a second check. For example, if the design was intended to be 120 mm wide, measure the same outer landmarks on paper.
Those two measurements answer different questions:
The percentage is diagnostic evidence, not a correction recipe. If a 120 mm stencil prints at 114 mm, do not automatically enlarge the source by 120/114 and call the problem solved. That can hide an automatic print setting and make the next reprint fail differently.
Before opening another app, classify the paper result.
Measure both width and height when possible. If both are reduced by roughly the same ratio, the design has probably been uniformly scaled somewhere in the workflow.
Typical places to inspect are the physical size assigned to the artwork, the PDF placement, a paper-size mismatch, and a print option such as Fit or Shrink. Those are categories to check, not proof of a specific cause.
Again, compare both axes and any calibration mark. A uniform enlargement points toward one scale factor rather than an aspect-ratio problem.
Check for an explicit custom scale above 100%, a fill/crop workflow, or a borderless mode that enlarges output on the specific printer path. Do not assume borderless always behaves this way; implementations vary.
That is not ordinary uniform scaling.
If a 120 x 80 mm design becomes 114 x 80 mm, width is at 95% while height remains at 100%. One compensation percentage cannot restore both dimensions. Inspect the artwork export, any image editor or layout step, and the print workflow for non-proportional stretching or fitting.
Return to a source with its aspect ratio locked unless the distortion was deliberate.
That is primarily a clipping or printable-area problem, not a wrong-scale diagnosis. Check paper size, margins, crop/fill behavior, and the Tattoo Stencil Printer Troubleshooter.

Do not stretch one page until the seam looks right. Compare the same calibration or known-distance check on each page, then verify that every page used the same paper definition, print application, orientation, scaling mode, and border setting.

Use one known dimension and carry it through the chain:
SOURCE / TARGET SIZE -> DOCUMENT -> PRINT SETTINGS OR APP -> PAPER
The goal is to find the earliest checkpoint that no longer agrees with the plan.
Write down the actual target in millimetres, centimetres, or inches. "About this big on screen" is not a target.
For lettering and asymmetrical work, also confirm which landmarks define the measurement so you do not accidentally measure a bounding box in one step and visible letterforms in another.
If the physical size was never explicitly set, stop here and create a known-size print master with the Size & Print Calculator. P17 is a diagnostic for a mismatch, not a substitute for defining the tattoo size.
For a raster image, verify that you are using the intended final file and not a different crop or revision. Pixel dimensions alone do not establish physical print size.
For a prepared PDF, check the page size and the intended artwork dimension inside the page. A PDF can encode a physical page and layout, which makes it useful as a print master, but it does not make every object inside that page automatically correct.

A4 and US Letter are not the same rectangle.
A4 is slightly narrower and taller; Letter is slightly wider and shorter. If a document prepared for one is sent through a workflow expecting the other, the application or driver may fit, shrink, clip, or reposition the page depending on its settings and printable area.
Do not assume the mismatch will always create the same percentage error. Match the PDF or document page definition to the physical paper first, then test again.
The names vary by application, operating system, driver, and manufacturer app, but common scale-changing controls include:
Adobe Acrobat, for example, documents Fit as scaling a PDF page to the selected paper's printable area and Actual size as printing without page scaling. That distinction is useful, but it belongs to that print interface, not every printer app on the market. See Adobe's current PDF page sizing and handling documentation.
If your interface exposes an explicit scale, remove automatic fitting when the prepared document is already correct and choose 100% or Actual Size when that is the intended behavior.
If the interface hides scaling controls, do not infer that no scaling exists. Print one calibration copy and let the ruler decide.
Return to the same reference dimension after every meaningful change.
A preview can help you catch an obvious crop or layout mistake, but it cannot certify the physical output. The measured sheet closes the loop.
If the same known-size PDF and the same settings repeatedly produce the same correct measurement, you have a reproducible print path. If the paper is still wrong, continue isolating one layer at a time rather than editing the tattoo artwork to compensate.
A PNG or JPG is fundamentally a grid of pixels. Some files may also carry resolution metadata, and some applications may use that metadata, but the image can still be placed or printed at many physical sizes.
A prepared PDF can encode a physical page size and position the artwork at a defined physical size on that page. That is why a controlled PDF is useful when a stencil must print at a known dimension.
The limit is important: PDF is not a lock against scaling.
A print application can still fit, shrink, enlarge, or crop the PDF. And if the artwork was placed at the wrong size when the PDF was created, "Actual Size" will faithfully print that wrong placement.
Use the raster artwork as the source when appropriate. Use a known-size document as the print master. Verify the paper.
In a print interface that defines it normally, 100% or Actual Size means no additional page scaling is applied at that stage.
It does not mean:
Adobe's Acrobat documentation is a useful concrete example: Actual size prints without scaling, while Fit scales to the printable area. Adobe also notes that content can be cropped when the unscaled page does not fit the selected paper.
Not every mobile or manufacturer app exposes a percentage or an Actual Size control. Apple's AirPrint instructions show that available print options depend on the application and printer. If you are printing specifically from an iPhone, use the iPhone stencil printing guide for that full workflow.
When the interface does not tell you enough, the calibration line and ruler are the deciding evidence.
Borderless printing is designed to remove visible page margins. On some printers and drivers, that is achieved by slightly enlarging the image beyond the paper edge and cropping what extends outside.
Canon, for example, documents this behavior for some models: the image is enlarged to fill the page and slight edge cropping may occur. See Canon's borderless printing documentation.
That does not mean every printer implements borderless output identically. It means borderless should not be treated as a neutral setting when you are trying to prove exact scale.
For a calibration print, use normal bordered output when the print path gives you that choice. Once the scale is verified, change another setting only if the job actually needs it and re-measure after the change.
A phone can send a correct file into a print workflow that exposes only a subset of desktop controls. A manufacturer app can also have its own paper presets, photo/document modes, crop options, and saved defaults.
Do not generalize from one printer brand or one Bluetooth app to another. Use the current instructions for the exact printer and application, then verify the result physically.

The same rule applies to both: a screen preview is not a calibration instrument.
Once you have a wrong-size sheet in front of you, use this recovery sequence:
If the file itself still needs a controlled physical layout, use the Size & Print Calculator. If the file is correct but physical printer output has other symptoms too, route them through the Printer Troubleshooter.
Suppose a 120 mm target prints at 114 mm. The measured result is 95% of target.
It is tempting to enlarge the artwork and print again. The problem is that you have not learned why the print path produced 95%.
If Fit to Page caused the reduction, the next file may be fitted again. If the document was built for the wrong paper, another printer may apply a different reduction. If the PDF artwork itself was only 114 mm wide, enlarging the source hides an export problem instead of correcting it.
Use the ratio to classify the failure. Correct the layer that introduced it. Then print a known reference at true size and measure again.
A reliable studio print path leaves enough evidence that you can reproduce the same stencil without remembering a one-off workaround.
Keep:
For a multi-session piece, also record the landmark distances that matter to the continuation. A flat paper measurement and a measurement over curved skin are not automatically interchangeable, so use stable landmarks and the same measurement convention when you need to recreate a section later.
The objective is not to remember that "this printer needs 103%." The objective is to keep a workflow where the file says what size the tattoo should be and the paper proves that the print path preserved it.
Do one final physical check:
If those checks pass, the wrong-size problem is resolved at the level that matters: the physical stencil now matches the dimensions you intended, and you know which print path produced it.
