Does a tattoo design have to be perfectly symmetrical?

No. Symmetry only matters when it is part of the artist's design intent. Intentional asymmetry, hand-drawn variation, texture, and uneven visual weight can all be deliberate choices. This tool is a comparison instrument, not a pass-or-fail test.

What does the difference tolerance do?

It ignores small average RGB pixel differences before highlighting a mismatch. Raising the tolerance can suppress anti-aliasing, JPEG texture, or subtle shading noise; it does not make the design more symmetrical.

Does Difference view work on shaded or color tattoo artwork?

It works as a rendered pixel comparison, but that is not the same as a geometry-only comparison. Shading, color, paper or photo backgrounds, resampling, and compression can all create highlighted pixels. Use Overlay first for structure, and treat Difference as a locator rather than a quality score.

Can I rotate the symmetry axis?

Not in the current checker. The comparison axis is vertical and artist-positioned. If the intended bilateral axis is horizontal or diagonal, rotate a working copy before upload so that the intended axis is vertical. The tool does not infer or auto-correct the axis.

Is design symmetry the same as centered tattoo placement?

No. Symmetry Checker compares one flat design with its own reflection. Centerline Checker uses a body photo plus a stencil and compares the stencil with an artist-chosen visual body axis. A symmetric design can still be placed off center, and an asymmetric design can be placed exactly on center.

What if only part of the design is supposed to be symmetrical?

Use Overlay as the primary check and interpret highlighted regions only inside the part that is meant to match. For a tightly localized check, crop a working copy to that motif before upload rather than treating unrelated artwork as an error.

Is my tattoo design uploaded?

Review intended symmetry, not taste

Use reflection as a reference, not a verdict.

Bilateral review is useful when the composition is intended to carry left-right structure, such as ornamental layouts, geometric motifs, paired elements, frontal mask or face motifs, centered lettering structures, and similar work. It is irrelevant when the design is intentionally asymmetric.

Choose the real design axis

Move the vertical guide to the structural center that matters for this composition. A centered canvas is not always a centered motif.

Choose which side you trust

Left to right and right to left are explicit because an artist may have one resolved side that should drive the comparison.

Overlay before reading pixels

Overlay is the fastest visual check for contour alignment, motif position, spacing, and bilateral structure without reducing the result to a number.

Use Difference as a locator

The difference mask highlights rendered RGB changes above the selected tolerance. It localizes visual delta; it does not identify design mistakes.

Read Difference correctly

Pixel difference is not geometric truth.

The checker compares the image as it is rendered in the browser. That makes Difference useful and explainable, but it also means non-geometric image information can create highlights.

Clean linework

Strongest structural signal

Clean black linework or stencil geometry on a simple background gives Difference the clearest relationship to left-right structure.

Shading and JPEG

Expect non-structural noise

Shading, color, anti-aliasing, resampling, and JPEG compression can differ even when the main contour relationship is acceptable. Raise tolerance only to filter small RGB changes, not to manufacture symmetry.

Alpha and background

The rendered background participates

Transparent artwork is composited onto the checker's warm preview background before RGB comparison. A photo or paper background in the source also participates, so use Overlay first when the background is visually complex.

Current axis scope: the checker uses one artist-positioned vertical axis. For a horizontal or diagonal bilateral axis, rotate a working copy before upload. Automatic axis inference stays out of the workflow because the software cannot know which asymmetry is intentional.

Keep the owners separate

Design symmetry, placement, body fit, and revision review are different jobs.

A flat design can be internally symmetric and still be placed off center. A deliberately asymmetric design can be placed exactly on center. Body curvature can then change how either design looks from a camera angle. Keep each question in its own tool.

Compare two versions

Whole-stencil left-right orientation for printing is another separate state. If the question is whether the complete stencil is facing the correct way across export, printer, paper, and transfer, use the mirror-for-printing workflow.
